Discovering My Voice in Photography
Your first 10,000 photographs will be your worst; a quote famously attributed to Henri Cartier-Bresson. A daunting prediction that, even in this age of technology where reaching 10,000 images is quicker than ever, still resonates profoundly. For me, it wasn't about perfecting the technique as much as it was about discovering my own voice in photography. What was the story I yearned to tell with my images?
What was it that I truly sought in photography?

In the beginning, my images were brimming with glamour, reflecting a polished exterior that everyone admired. However, upon closer inspection, I could sense a void in my work. I was taking pictures but was I truly telling a story? Reflecting on my journey, I realised that it was the deep connections I formed with the ferryman on the Yamuna river, with Kadek amidst the rice fields of Bali, that led to authentic and impacting portraits. I realised that it was not just about the image but the stories behind them, the connection I shared with the people I photographed. That was the day my perspective shifted, evolving from purely creating aesthetic imagery to focusing on authenticity and connection.

Creating a portrait is not an immediate process for me.
I listen, I connect, I wait for the right moment. I invest time to form a deep, meaningful conversation with the individuals I am about to photograph. Only when a connection has been established, when the individual starts to open up, do I start to photograph. My creative process isn’t about simply capturing a face but the essence of the individual, the stories that their expressions narrate. This ethos is vividly reflected in my storytelling series such as "Inked Declarations", "The Moments", and "Caithy's World". These series aren't just a collection of images, but a body of work that resonates with authenticity, presence, and stories that are worth being told.

A pivotal part of my creative process is how I seek inspiration. We live in an era that is dominated by social media, where content is consumed en masse, and often fleetingly. I believe that to truly appreciate a photograph, to understand the story behind it, one needs to look beyond the digital screens. Prints, books, and offline images, offer an intimate interaction with the photograph, allowing a deeper analysis and understanding of the story it tells.

Today I am more committed to my path than ever before.
The path has changed since I first started, reflecting not only my growth as a photographer but also as an individual. Deeper, more profound, and less attracted to the fleeting distractions of everyday life, my approach to photography is a testament to my monochrome attitude. It is about finding those decisive moments, about creating stories that are worth telling, and ultimately about connecting with the authentic beauty of the world around us. After all, photography for me is not a competition but a journey of discovery, a quest to find my own voice in this vivid world of images.
Perfection is not the goal, authenticity and depth are.
There is always something new to learn, and I know I will never fully arrive. It is a journey that I undertake, one that will resemble a quest for as long as I live, to find my decisive moment. The path may seem daunting at first, but as I have learned, each step taken in authenticity is a step closer to finding your own voice in photography.

Die Entdeckung meiner Stimme in der Fotografie:
Eine monochrome Reise zur Authentizität
"Deine ersten 10.000 Fotografien werden die schlechtesten sein", ein Zitat, das berühmt Henri Cartier-Bresson zugeschrieben wird. Eine entmutigende Vorhersage, die selbst in diesem Zeitalter der Technologie, in dem das Erreichen von 10.000 Bildern schneller als je zuvor ist, immer noch tiefgründig nachhallt. Für mich ging es nicht so sehr darum, die Technik zu perfektionieren, sondern eher darum, meine eigene Stimme in der Fotografie zu entdecken. Was war die Geschichte, die ich mit meinen Bildern erzählen wollte?
Was war es, das ich in der Fotografie wirklich suchte?
"Ein Foto ist nicht nur ein Bild, sondern die Widerspiegelung eines geteilten Moments, einer erzählten Geschichte und einer geschaffenen Verbindung."
Am Anfang waren meine Bilder voller Glamour, reflektierten eine polierte Oberfläche, die alle bewunderten. Bei näherer Betrachtung jedoch spürte ich eine Leere in meiner Arbeit. Ich machte Fotos, aber erzählte ich wirklich eine Geschichte? Bei der Reflexion über meine Reise wurde mir klar, dass es die tiefen Verbindungen waren, die ich mit dem Fährmann am Yamuna-Fluss, mit Kadek inmitten der Reisfelder von Bali, geknüpft hatte, die zu authentischen und wirkungsvollen Porträts führten. Mir wurde klar, dass es nicht nur um das Bild ging, sondern um die Geschichten dahinter, die Verbindung, die ich mit den Menschen, die ich fotografierte, teilte. Das war der Tag, an dem meine Perspektive sich veränderte, sie entwickelte sich von der reinen Schaffung ästhetischer Bilder hin zur Konzentration auf Authentizität und Verbindung.
Ich höre zu, verbinde mich.
Ein Porträt zu erstellen, ist für mich kein sofortiger Prozess.
Ich höre zu, ich verbinde mich, ich warte auf den richtigen Moment. Ich investiere Zeit, um eine tiefe, bedeutungsvolle Konversation mit den Personen, die ich fotografieren werde, aufzubauen. Erst wenn eine Verbindung hergestellt wurde, wenn die Person beginnt, sich zu öffnen, beginne ich zu fotografieren. Mein kreativer Prozess besteht nicht einfach darin, ein Gesicht einzufangen, sondern die Essenz der Person, die Geschichten, die ihre Ausdrücke erzählen. Diese Ethik spiegelt sich lebhaft in meiner Storytelling-Serie wie "Inked Declarations", "The Moments" und "Caithy's World" wider. Diese Serien sind nicht nur eine Sammlung von Bildern, sondern ein Werk, das mit Authentizität, Präsenz und Geschichten, die es wert sind, erzählt zu werden, nachhallt.

Ein entscheidender Teil meines kreativen Prozesses ist, wie ich Inspiration suche. Wir leben in einer Ära, die von sozialen Medien dominiert wird, in der Inhalte massenhaft und oft flüchtig konsumiert werden. Ich glaube, dass man, um ein Foto wirklich zu schätzen, um die Geschichte dahinter zu verstehen, über die digitalen Bildschirme hinausblicken muss. Drucke, Bücher und Offline-Bilder bieten eine intime Interaktion mit dem Foto und ermöglichen eine tiefere Analyse und ein tieferes Verständnis der Geschichte, die es erzählt.
Ich bin meinem Weg mehr denn je verpflichtet.
Der Weg hat sich seit meinem ersten Start verändert und reflektiert nicht nur mein Wachstum als Fotograf oder Künstler, sondern auch als Individuum. Tiefer, bedeutungsvoller und weniger von den flüchtigen Ablenkungen des Alltags angezogen, ist mein Ansatz in der Fotografie ein Zeugnis meiner monochromen Einstellung. Es geht darum, diese entscheidenden Momente zu finden, Geschichten zu schaffen, die es wert sind, erzählt zu werden, und letztendlich darum, die authentische Schönheit der Welt um uns herum zu verbinden. Schließlich ist die Fotografie für mich kein Wettbewerb, sondern eine Entdeckungsreise, eine Suche nach meiner eigenen Stimme in dieser lebendigen Welt der Bilder.
Perfektion ist nicht das Ziel, Authentizität ist es, Tiefe ist es.
Es gibt immer etwas neues zu lernen, und ich weiß, dass ich niemals vollständig ankommen werde. Es ist eine Reise, die ich unternehme, die so lange ich lebe, einer Suche ähneln wird, meinen entscheidenden Moment zu finden. Der Weg mag anfangs entmutigend erscheinen, aber wie ich gelernt habe, ist jeder in Authentizität unternommene Schritt ein Schritt näher daran, seine eigene Stimme in der Fotografie zu finden.
